The Nigerian movie industry has been on a roll in recent times, presenting top-notch content and blockbusters across all movie genres. And guess what! There is a new face in these action movies. Nigerian actor, Tobi Bakre. is at the forefront of all this action
Tobi Bakre
Born and raised in Lagos, Tobi Bakre made his first big appearance on the Big Brother Nigeria reality show, where he emerged as 2nd runner-up of 20 housemates. He is a Nigerian actor, model, host, compere, and photographer. Tobi started his acting career as a character on a Nigerian daily show ‘Hustle’ where he portrayed the average struggle of a Nigerian returnee living in the country for the first time. He later had his major cinema break in the movie ‘Sugar Rush’ which did great at the box office. Subsequently, he has appeared in other amazing movies and TV shows such as; The Rattle Snake, MTV Shuga (MTV’s HIV/AIDS edutainment series), and Mokalik, to mention a few.
In Inkblot’s 2022 movie; Blood Covenant, Tobi played one of the lead roles, a compelling story that further brought him to the spotlight. He shocked the industry with his performance in the highest grossing movie in Nigeria in 2022, ‘Brotherhood’ where he played the twin of a cop caught on the other side of the law.
Tobi Bakre, Brotherhood, Gangs of Lagos, and his Africa Magic Nomination
In September 2022, Brotherhood, a Nigerian crime-action thriller produced by Jade Osiberu was released to cinemas in Africa. Asides from other talented casts in the movie, the lead actor, Tobi Bakre made a statement with his impressive acting skills. The movie later dominated the box office as the number-one Nollywood film for ten consecutive weeks. It grossed three hundred and twenty-one million Naira, making it the highest-grossing Nollywood film of 2022.
Six months after making a statement with his role in Brotherhood, Tobi has made a major big-screen break with his acting in a lead role in the movie “Gangs of Lagos”. He played the character OBA, a boy born into the core struggle and street life of Lagos but will stop at nothing to get a better life for himself and his own. Gangs of Lagos is Prime Videos first original out of Africa and was also showcased at TIFF. Blood Covenant, Brotherhood, and Gangs of Lagos are all on Prime Videos and have all reshaped the Nigerian movie industry.
