The 2020 Brit Awards took place on Tuesday (18 February) at London’s 02 Arena. This year’s ceremony, which celebrated the event’s 40th anniversary, was presented by Jack Whitehall. Performers included Harry Styles, Stormzy and Billie Eilish who sang the new Bond theme song No Time to Die in the track’s live debut.
Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi was the top winner at the 2020 Brit awards. Although he did not have a clean sweep of his four nominations, it was a great time for him.
Capaldi picked up best new artist and best song for Someone You Loved, which spent seven weeks at No 1 in spring 2019, later topping the US charts and earning a Grammy nomination
One of the highlights of the evening included Dave adding lyrics to his song “Black”, which saw him call Boris Johnson a “real racist” and criticized the UK media’s treatment of Meghan Markle. Dave while picking up the Best Album award, used the opportunity to celebrate “everyone that comes from the place I come from”
Cue a big cheer from Stormzy – and the “young kings and queens that are chasing their dreams.”I am no different from you,” he said. “I am just a guy. Everything I’m saying is a fact: you can do anything you put your mind to.” He finished with an acknowledgment of “anyone who is inside doing their time” – including his brother, Christopher: “Hold it down, I love you guys.”
Billie Eilish choked back tears as she accepted the award for the best international female. As she was overwhelmed by the audience’s response to her performance minutes earlier. “I felt very hated recently,” said the 18-year-old, who had earlier told the BBC she had stopped reading comments on social media.
