Nigerian man, Emmanuel Ikechukwu Umeonyirioha becomes the first Igbo lecturer in the University of Oxford.
Ikechukwu who is a sino-Nigeria relations and language expert, was inducted on February 18, 2022 by Marion Sadoux, Head of modern language programmes, University of Oxford Language Centre.
Appreciative and grateful for the opportunity, Ikechukwu who is also a translation director, took to his Twitter page to express his gratitude. He tweets, “this became possible in account of the James Currey Society. This is the first time Igbo language will be taught at the university. History has been made.
I am so happy and grateful for this opportunity. I promise to make the Igbo language and culture known to the world.”
Dr Onyeka Nwelue, director, James Currey prize for literature, affirms the induction on his Twitter page. He also tweets, “today, through the James Currey Society, we have been approved to kick off the first Igbo Language Class at the University of Oxford.
“Our induction happened today by Marion Sadoux, Head of Modern Language Programmes, University of Oxford Language Centre.
“This would be the first time Igbo language will be taught at the university and will be handled by Emmanuel Ikechukwu Umenyirioha.
“First class starts next week Thursday, 3-4pm, on 12 Woodstock Road.”
