The Headies 2019 has come but not completely done because now it’s the time to break it all down! The 13th edition, the award was held at the Eko Convention Center Victoria Island Lagos, Saturday night. The award show is organised annually to recognize and reward the best in Nigerian music. This year’s show, hosted by actor and HipTV Presenter Nancy Isime and the Alaga Ibile himself, Reminisce, coincided with the most talked about show of the moment, Wizkid’s StarBoy Fest in London and the joyous birth of famous couple, Davido and Chioma’s son. So the 2019 Headies had to fight for its number one spot on the trends chart and also do without some of Nigeria’s biggest stars with Davido, Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, Burna Boy, Reekado Banks and many more absent.
From Teni leading the pack with four Headies awards, to Falz carting away three awards including HipHop album of the Year, to Rema winning the highly anticipated next rated category against huge contenders like Zlatan, Fireboy DML, Joeboy and to Burna Boy winning artiste of the year, it certainly was a night to remember.
And now to the most important part of the night, for us of course – the fashion! Celebrities turned up in their best attires but you have to give it to the guys. They held it down this year! It was refreshing to see the guys in a variety of outfits ranging from jackets to suits to berets and other non-regular looks and dare we say it, outdoing the women!
There were a lot of monochrome looks, belts/sashes, thigh high slits, and shimmer on the red carpet. Channeling our inner Bovi and Cuppy, some of the looks were great, others were hmmm just there, (you’d get it if you were there or watched live) but here are our favorite looks from the night.
Top 10 Best Dressed Stars at the Headies 2019
Winner of Big Brother 2019 reality show, Mercy Eke popularly referred to as Lambo left nothing to chance with her look. The Queen of Highlights as she loves to call herself, Mercy waltzed into the Headies in a floor length black dress by Erica Moore and styled by Swanky Jerry. The shimmery black gown had a zig zag cutout that covered her in the right places, decently teasing you, giving you a sneak peak without giving it all to you.
2. Tobi Bakre
Another gorgeous look from a Big Brother Naija alum. Actor and media personality, Tobi Bakre looked every inch the dapper gentleman in this snake skin suit by David Wej. Tobi took a much more formal approach with the bow tie. He paired this deliciousness with black shoes and a pair of glasses. (Since his iconic Martell look with the clear glasses, Tobi never seem to attend any red carpet function without a his now signature clear glasses. Who will help us tell him he also looks good without the glasses?)
3. Toke Makinwa
Multi-media personality Toke is not new to being on best dressed lists. Dressed in a blue dress from Tubo, Toke’s dress was accessorized at the shoulders with gold embellishments, spitting a thigh high slit that showed off her toned legs. The entrepreneur complimented her look with a blue clutch and strappy heels. Hair snatched, waist snatched, our wigs? Oh she snatched that too!
Dressed in all black, looking like an assassin, Ebuka totally killed this look by Junior Maphia (no surprises with designer name and look). From the beret to the jacket, it was a trendy mafia look, so fresh and different … plus he was all strapped and ready to slay at the show.
Media personality and Big Brother Naija alum was styled by her favourite celebrity stylist, Medlin Boss. Straight from being a bridesmaid at her friend’s wedding held same day to the Headies 2019, Alex was shining in a gold floor length dress with exaggerated sleeves and a plunging neckline.
Popular fashion influencer Dénola was dressed in a floral piece by David Wej. Giving off hip Indian royal vibes, Dénola was one the conveyers of the belt/sash movement at the Headies 2019. Peep that new haircut and the lavish chest accessories though!
Cool FM’s OAP and Hypeman Dotun aka the Energy Gad, stood out in this gorgeous suit from 27 Designs. This is a bold piece and the energy gad didn’t disappoint. Floral print suit on a black shirt paired with black shoes from Mathias footwears. Super Dope!
Aside from the artistes who won awards, a major winner from the night was menswear designer David Wej, responsible for three of the best dressed stars on this list – including honorable mention Seyi Awolowo also dressed by David Wej. Back to Oke’s look… Once again, celebrity stylist SwankyJerry outdid himself with this look just like he did for Ike’s boo, Mercy Eke. This monochrome piece consisted of a black suit, white turtleneck with white straps and it all fits perfectly on Ike and his “ice-cream gangster” personality.
Self acclaimed Port-Harcourt’s first daughter and a housemate on the recently concluded Big Brother Naija-Pepper Dem edition, Tacha, served hot pepper at the Headies 2019 in a sizzling red-hot dress from Tolubally Couture. Fit in the right places, and accentuated all the perks, plus hair and makeup to match, Tacha cleans up nice and was definitely a top best dressed star.
10. Omashola
An interesting but solid look on our favourite Warri boy, Omashola. Styled in gold shirt and pants with a matching belt by Tiannahplace Empire, we can’t deny how effortlessly Omashola slayed his Headies 2019 look. However, a black belt or no belt would have taken this look up another notch. We’re still asking for Omashola’s skin regime as his skin is popping!
