Joker has been a big winner since award season started and it’s looking like the 2020 Oscars will not be different. Nominations for 92nd Academy Awards were announced Monday morning. Joker, which has sparked a lot of backlash and critical review due to its extreme violence leads the pack with 11 nominations, the most by any film for this year’s Oscar Awards.

Once Upon a Time In Hollywood, 1917 and The Irishman each garnered ten nominations followed closely. Parasite, Jojo Rabbit and Marriage Story picked up six nominations each while Bombshell got three nominations.

Ford v Ferrari, The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit, Joker, Little Women, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, Marriage Story, Parasite and 1917 are vying for best picture this year.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino’s fictional depiction of Hollywood in the 1960s and The Irishman, a mob drama starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci which many see as the last big movie by some of the greats are seen by most critics as the strong contenders in this category. 1917, the centers on two British soldiers on a dangerous trip to deliver a critical message that could save 1,600 troops.  Also in this prestigious category is Little Women, a tale of four sisters growing up in Massachusetts during the Civil War; Marriage Story, which centers on a divorce and custody battle; Parasite, the South Korean psychological thriller; Jojo Rabbit, about a young German boy who counts Hitler as an imaginary friend; and Ford v Ferrari, based on the true story of Ford’s goal to make a faster car than the Ferrari.

Another Year, Another Best Director Snub for Women

For the second year in a row, there were no women nominated in the best director category: Nominees included Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, Bong Joon-ho, Sam Mendes and Todd Phillips, with the notable snub of Greta Gerwig (Little Women)

In what is fast becoming a ballsy move by the organizers of the award, there will not be a host for the Oscars. This is  coming after the debacle over Kevin Hart’s tweets in 2019 which largely overshadowed last year’s award ceremony

“There was a lot of conversation about which way to go and there may be a day when we decide to have a host again, but the focus has been on the most entertaining show and not on the host,” ABC entertainment president Karey Burke told reporters last week. The nominations which were announced Monday morning had Issa Rae and John Cho as hosts. The Academy Awards will air Sunday, Feb. 9 on ABC.
