The 94th Academy Awards (2022 Oscars) was held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and hosted by Regina Hall, Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes. CODA was the big winner of the night winning the Best Picture Award. The film was nominated in three categories and won all three. 

This year’s race for the Oscar’s became closer than expected in the final few weeks of the awards season, with Apple TV+ film CODA becoming fierce competition for former favourite, Netflix’s The Power of the Dog.

Will Smith

Actor, Will Smith later won the Oscar for Best Actor and apologised to the academy and his fellow nominees for hitting Chris Rock during the awards. “Love will make you do crazy things,” he said.

Will Smith had never won an Oscar, despite 30 years in the business. The 53-year-old has come close twice before, being nominated for “Ali” and “The Pursuit of Happiness”. He made it third time lucky for portraying the father of future tennis champions Serena and Venus Williams in King Richard.

CODA
Deaf actor Troy Kotsur won the best supporting actor Oscar for his role in CODA.

CODA was the first film produced by a streaming service to win Best Picture. It won three awards all together. Ariana DeBose became the first queer Black woman to win an acting award, taking home Best Supporting Actress for West Side Story. Troy Kotsur of CODA became the first deaf man to win an Academy Award for acting. Dune won the most awards of the night with six wins.

Samuel Jackson, Elaine May and Liv Ullmann were honoured with the Honorary Academy Awards in 2022. Danny Glover was also honoured with The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the 2022 Oscars
