The film Parasite made history at the 92nd Academy Awards- The OSCARS, to become the first non-English language film to win best picture. Parasite, the big winner of the night, took home “Best International Film” and “Best Picture”. Bong Joon Ho won the Oscars for “Best Director” as well. This is the first time in the history of the Academy Awards that a foreign language film has won this Big!
In her acceptance speech, Producer Kwak Sin-ae standing alongside Director Bong Joon-ho’s said “We never imagined this would ever happen. We are so happy. I feel like a very important moment in history is happening right now,” she continued, “I express my deep gratitude and respect for all the members of the academy for making this decision”
Joker, which had the most nominations for any individual movie, only bagged two Oscars, for “Best Actor” won by Joaquin Phoenix and Best Original Score won by Hildur Guðnadóttir.
Brad Pitt, Taika Waititi, Renee Zellweger, and Laura Dern continued their season of award winning prizes. They won Oscars for “Best Supporting Actor”, “Best Adapted Screenplay”, “Best Actress”, and “Best Supporting Actress” respectively. 1917 and Ford v Ferrari both took home Oscars for achieving excellence in technical categories like “Best Editing” and “Best Sound Mixing” respectively. Elton John won the prize for “Best Original Song” for his work on Rocketman.
This is Brad Pitt’s first Oscar win in an acting category. He had previously received a “best picture Oscar” for 12 Years a Slave, which he produced. After thanking director Quentin Tarantino and co-star Leonardo DiCaprio, Pitt went on to thank the rest of the cast and crew. He gave notable recognition to the stunt coordinators and stunt crews. A nod to his character in this film.
Oscars with no Female Director Nominee or Winner!
The ceremony was again held without a designated host just like in 2019. The night opened with a raucous musical number by Janelle Monae. This was followed by an introduction by two past hosts, Steve Martin and Chris Rock. They joked about the lack of female directors and people of colour among the nominees.
There were other musical performances from Eminem and Cynthia Erivo.
