In a tweet on Monday afternoon, the WTO officially announced Dr Okonjo-Iweala as the new Director-General of The World Trade Organization.
The “WTO members took the decision to appoint Dr Okonjo-Iweala at a special meeting of the General Council, following a selection process that included eight candidates from around the world”

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala makes history as the first woman and the first African to lead the WTO.
Her term starts on the 1st of March 2021.

With this appointment, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala becomes not just the first African to be Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), but also the first woman ever to hold the position!
