“Great occasions do not make heroes or cowards; they simply unveil them to our eyes. Silently and imperceptibly, as we wake or sleep, we grow strong or weak; and at last some crisis shows what we have become.” – Brooke Foss Westcott
Today’s challenge has to do with forgiveness. A lot of us find it difficult to forgive especially if the offender is very dear to us and the offense is very grave. In religion, forgiveness is a mandate practice but a lot of people suppress dealing with the hurt of betrayal and move on. Some don’t know that they do this, while others willingly do this in order not to go through the emotions involved in forgiving someone. At the end of the day, this weighs on our hearts and mind. We then find that the situation starts to turn into a burden.
Forgive Someone Who Has Deeply Offended You
Whether it’s a simple argument with your spouse or long-held resentment toward a family member or friend, unresolved conflict can go deeper than you may realize—it may be affecting your physical health. The good news: Studies have found that the act of forgiveness can reap huge rewards for your health. This include; lowering the risk of heart attack; improving cholesterol levels and sleep; and reducing pain, blood pressure, and levels of anxiety, depression and stress. The research points to an increase in the forgiveness-health connection as you age.
“There is an enormous physical burden to being hurt and disappointed,” says Karen Swartz, M.D, director of the Mood Disorders Adult Consultation Clinic at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Chronic anger puts you into a fight-or-flight mode, which results in numerous changes in heart rate, blood pressure and immune response. Those changes, then, increase the risk of depression, heart disease and diabetes, among other conditions. Forgiveness, however, calms stress levels, leading to improved health.”
We sincerely hope that as you choose forgiveness today, you will find, relieve and peace and if you like, you can let them know they are forgiven.
