The National Honours Award Night was held on October 11 and many icons were awarded based on their good service to the nation.

This followed the list of nominees released by PR Nigeria on Independence day, October 1 which contained the names of the nominees according to titles. The title of the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) had 5 recipients. Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) had 54 awardees; Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) had 67. Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) 64, Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) 101; Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) 75; Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) 56, and Federal Republic Medal (FRM) had 8 award recipients.

The Honour Awards was eventually presented today at the State House Abuja by President Muhammadu Buhari. 450 recipients were awarded, making the total number of Nigeria’s National Honours Awardees 5,341 since 1963.

Five out of the 450 recipients were awarded the title of Grand Commanders of the Order of the Niger (GCON); 55 the Commanders of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR), 74 as Members of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR); 77 the Officers of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR), 110 the Officers of the Order of the Niger (OON); 55 the Members of the Order of the Niger (MON), and 65 as Commanders of the Order of the Niger (CON).

Other notable recipients.

Among the honourees of the title of Officer of the Order of the Niger(OON) are Iyin Aboyeji, Co-founder of Andela, a global job placement network for software developers; Ezra Olubi, Co-founder of Paystack, a merchant payments platform and Shola Akinlade, its Chief Executive Officer. Artiste and entertainer Teniola “Teni”, and music icon, 2face, were awarded the title of Member of the  Order of the Niger(MON)

Popular artiste Burna Boy was awarded the title of the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR); while Director of the World Trade Organisation and former minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was awarded the title of the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON). Dr Ola Brown, Founder of Flying Doctors; a healthcare investment company was also awarded Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).
