Fashion is constantly recycled year on year, century after century, across cultures and demographics. Once they are from the past they are dubbed “Old School” and if they are really old like Dracula then they are called Vintage. For example Christian Dior just released their Haute Couture Spring 2020 Collection and you can see that they drew inspiration from the Greek mythology.
People have vintage or old school themed parties all the time. Either for birthday parties, movie premieres, school events. People turn up with their best representation of the old school style or vintage fashion.
Today we are focusing on 90’s fashion that have made remarkable come backs. 90’s of baggy jeans, dungarees, bandanas, girl bands, boy bands, pure R’n’B music, gang hip hop, small lens and frame shades, berets, baggy jerseys, colorful baggy sweat suits and a lot more.
Let’s take a look at 5 of those remarkable comebacks today.
The likes of Missy Elliot, Biggi, 2pac, Janet Jackson etc rocked the beret back then. They wore it over tops and jeans or dresses and the guys wore it over baggy shirts and jeans.
Now it’s back. It hasn’t become street style yet because of cult implications but celebrities such as Wizkid, Simi, Kizz Daniel, Tiwa Savage, Rihanna, Nancy Isime, Bollylomo, FalzTheBahdGuy and more have been known to wear it to events or during video shoots and so on.
- Colored wigs
This trend is currently very popular among the younger generation, the generation Z as they’ve been dubbed.
If you are part of the night life in the happening cities in Nigeria and around the world, you’d see bright coloured bob wigs being rocked just like Lil Kim, Pink, Avril Lavigne used to do back in the 90s.
If you’ve followed from inception Nicki Minaj’s career, you’d see that she has paid homage to this trend and it is has been accustomed to be “her style”.
Today, celebrities, the likes of Cardi B, Alex Unusual, Kylie Jenner and every stylish chic out there rock coloured wigs.
- Alté glasses:
The sun shades that are currently trending, as “alté” shades didn’t just come into fashion. Your moms and dads, uncles and aunts most likely rocked those shades back in the day.
Back then, they obviously weren’t called “alté” because it was not associated with a type of style. It was just regular shades to them.
Small rectangular, square and circle dark shades/ light shades. The likes of the legendary Aaliyah (RIP) Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie, Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige, and Jennifer Lopez, everybody born in that era rocked those shades back then.
If you doubt me, refer to your uncles and aunts pictures back in school and try not to laugh while at it.
Now that they are back in fashion, they come in different colors, sizes, frames, shapes and they are a must have as a fashionable person.
- Boot cut jeans
Skinny jeans aren’t entirely out of fashion, but the boot cut jeans are here to stay! (Boot cut jeans to some, “Bongo” to others).
Boot cuts offer variety to the world of jeans, a world where skinny jeans has reigned supreme for long. They start off as straight jeans and then widen at the knees.
Back in the day, it was a little below the waist so it would show off your belly, now they are mostly high-waisted to cinch the waist and/or belly. Celebrities in the 90’s were dedicated to their work out routines because of the fear of looking unappealing in those Jeans. Now, they are made in different sizes to fit all shapes and still look smashing!
Check out Kylie Jenner, Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, Genevieve Nnaji, Oge Okoye, Naomi Campbell, etc who has made us fall in love with this outfit all over again
- Biker shots
Some of you may know “biker shorts” as an undergarment for skirts and gowns and not as a piece of clothing on its own.
Back in the 90’s biker shorts were rampant and they weren’t in black color alone. Just as you may see in Nigeria today, they were in different colors.
Some of your moms and aunties rocked it with big Ts or sweatshirts and sneakers.
Now that it has made a come back, it’s being paired with gorgeous little waist purses. I guess it’s our own little way of reinventing it.
Back then, it was for workout and also served as casual wear for when you want to pick up something from the store or drop your kids off at school or visit a friend. Now people pair it with bralettes and heels or big Ts as before. They wear it to events, parties, as travel outfit, etc.
The Kardashians are famous for wearing biker shots, as well as Nigerian celebs such as Alex Unusual, Nancy Isime, Tiwa Savage, Mercy Eke and more.
