History has been made as the Nigerian women’s U-19 cricket team, the Junior Yellow Greens, step onto the international stage at the ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Malaysia. This marks Nigeria’s second qualification for a Cricket World Cup, following the trailblazing achievement of the male U-19 team, who competed in the 2020 edition in South Africa.

The Junior Yellow Greens have etched their names in history as the first female cricket team from Nigeria—and West Africa as a whole—to qualify for a World Cup. Their journey to the tournament, which runs from 18 January to 2 February 2025, is a testament to determination and talent, showcasing Nigeria’s growing presence in global cricket.

Cricket World Cup – A Historic Qualification

The Nigerian team secured their spot at the World Cup through a stellar performance during the regional qualifiers. Despite weather disruptions, including a rain-induced washout in the final, they outpaced Zimbabwe on points earned in the group stages to clinch their ticket to Malaysia. This achievement is not just a victory for Nigeria but a significant milestone for cricket in West Africa.

This year’s tournament features 16 teams, including defending champions India, England, Australia, and New Zealand, who were the top four finishers in the inaugural 2023 edition. Joining them are debutants Malaysia (the host), Nepal, Samoa, and Nigeria, adding fresh energy to the competition.

This is an extraordinary opportunity for the Junior Yellow Greens to compete against the best young talents in women’s cricket. They opened their campaign in Group C against Samoa, but the match was abandoned due to heavy rain, resulting in shared points. Upcoming fixtures include a clash with cricket powerhouse New Zealand on 20 January at 3:30 AM (WAT) and a match against South Africa on 22 January at 7:30 AM (WAT).
