In a historic shift for Italian luxury fashion, Donatella Versace is stepping down as chief creative officer of Versace after nearly three decades at the helm. Taking her place is Dario Vitale, the former design and image director of Miu Miu, who will officially assume his new role in April.

What’s next for Donatella Versace

Donatella, whose leadership has shaped the brand’s unmistakable aesthetic since the passing of her brother Gianni in 1997, will not be leaving Versace entirely. Instead, she transitions into a new role as the brand’s chief ambassador, focusing on philanthropic initiatives and the legacy of the Versace Foundation.

Vitale’s arrival comes at a time of major changes for Versace, as parent company Capri Holdings reportedly nears a $1.5 billion acquisition deal with Prada Group. If the deal materialises, it could see Vitale returning to familiar territory, having previously played a key role in Miu Miu’s meteoric rise under Prada’s umbrella.

For Capri Holdings, the move is part of a wider restructuring effort following the failed $8.5 billion merger with Tapestry, the parent company of Coach. Versace, once envisioned as a $2 billion brand, has struggled to hit its growth targets, with sales remaining just above the $1 billion mark. The introduction of Vitale is seen as a bold attempt to inject new energy into the brand and reposition it for greater success.

Can Vitale Deliver?

Dario Vitale is widely credited with playing a key role in Miu Miu’s recent explosion in popularity, overseeing an 84% surge in retail sales last quarter. His expertise in merging brand heritage with modern appeal has cemented Miu Miu’s place as one of the hottest names in luxury fashion today.

Now, all eyes are on Vitale to see if he can work similar magic at Versace. CEO Emmanuel Gintzburger is optimistic, describing him as “a rare talent who understands the DNA of Versace and its vast potential for growth.”

The Future of Versace

With fresh creative leadership and the possibility of Prada Group ownership on the horizon, Versace is at a crossroads. Will Vitale maintain the house’s iconic boldness, or will he take the brand in an entirely new direction?

Fashion lovers won’t have to wait long to find out. One thing is certain—Versace is stepping into a new era, and the industry is watching every move.
