Following the passing of Pope Francis, a landmark moment for the Roman Catholic Church, has occurred as Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the United States has been elected as the 267th pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. His election marks the first time an American has ascended to the papacy in the Church’s 2,000-year history.

A Historic First for the Catholic Church

The conclave, convened after the death of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025, began on May 7 and concluded on May 8 with the traditional white smoke rising from the Sistine Chapel chimney, signaling a successful election. Of the 135 eligible cardinal electors, 133 participated, representing the largest voting bloc in conclave history.

At 69 years old, Pope Leo XIV brings a wealth of experience to the papacy. Born in Chicago, he spent much of his clerical career as a missionary in Peru and later led the Vatican’s Congregation for Bishops. His deep ties to Latin America and his commitment to pastoral care reflect a blend of American roots and global perspective.
