Black Panther becomes the first super hero movie to be nominated in the “Best picture” category of the Oscars. With $700 million in domestic box office receipts from Black Panther, the Marvel flick became the third-highest grossing film of all time in the US. Worldwide, Black Panther has accumulated over $1.3 billion. This Oscar nomination makes it the third-highest grossing best picture nominee ever, behind James Cameron’s Avatar and Titanic.
A Marvel comic book movie, Black Panther won the world over and specifically connected with an audience that yearned for representation beyond the “normal’ white superhero movies. Other nominees for best picture are: “A Star Is Born,” ”Roma,” ”Green Book,” ”The Favourite,” ”BlacKkKlansman,” ”Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Vice.” Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite” have led all films with 10 nominations each heading to the 91st Academy Awards while Black Panther sits nicely with 7 nominations.
The 91st annual Academy Awards which had been shrouded in controversy following previously announced host, Kevin Hart will hold on Sunday the 24th of February 24 at Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles, California. And as of now, the awards will be host-less but we are curious to see how the Academy will handle things.
