“What if women ruled the world?”, “Would Old Women Be Revered?”, “Would Buildings Resemble Wombs?” and “Would the Earth be Protected?” These were some of the burning questions hanging over guests at the Christian Dior Haute Couture fashion show in Paris, Monday.
The collection brings to mind the essence of femininity as it draws inspiration from ancient Greek Mythology. A lot of gold, tulle, silhouettes, pleats, and also bold suits that are popular with the brand. Dior also ditched the conventional heels popular with fashion shows for regular flats embellished with golden leaves.
The location was named “The Female Divine”; a womb-like chamber created by American artist Judy Chicago, installed in the gardens of the Muse Rodin, created in a record time of 4 months. It’s from this structure that the banners with the inspiring words hung. What inspired this?
It’s an open secret that Dior’s Creative Director is a feminist. She joined forces with American feminist artist and art educator, Judy Chicago to realise a dream of Judy’s from 1977. The 80-year old first designed the structure back then but never had it realised in 3D. “I’m just glad I’ve lived long enough to see it” she said.
This collection is for women by women. The designs aren’t exactly new but are strong statements that speak to every female. Maria Grazia Chiuri constantly voices her feminist opinions through her ever gorgeous creations and we must give her credit for that consistency since her debut fashion show as Creative Director of Dior, where she got the world buzzing by featuring a T-shirt centered around the title of Chimamanda’s popular TED Talk, We Should All Be Feminists.
Her looks are not just clothes, designs or fabric, every detail is a message. As the first female creative director at Dior, Chiuri is using her huge platform to not only support women artists but to put the spotlight on issues that are not commonplace in the fashion world. For this, we celebrate her!
