Under the auspices of the NAACP Image Awards 2024, the NAACP shone a spotlight on exceptional representations and accomplishments of people of colour across film, television, music, and literature in the preceding year, 2023. Emcee’d by the charismatic Queen Latifah, the ceremony graced screens on March 16, 2024, courtesy of BET and CBS simulcasts, while select categories were livestreamed on the Image Awards website from March 11th to 14th. This award ceremony took place at the iconic Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
The journey to this remarkable event began with submissions for the 55th NAACP Image Awards, open online from July 31 to November 3, 2023. Public engagement flourished as online voting for performance categories’ shortlisted nominations ran from January 25 to February 24, 2024.
When the nominations were announced on January 25, 2024, The Color Purple and Colman Domingo led the charge in the motion picture categories, capturing 16 and 3 nominations, respectively. Television and streaming categories found Ayo Edebiri at the forefront with notable nods for Abbott Elementary and The Bear. Meanwhile, in music, Victoria Monét and Usher emerged as frontrunners, earning six and five nominations, respectively. RCA Records dominated the recording categories with an impressive 20 nominations, while HarperCollins Publisher and Penguin Random House emerged as literary frontrunners with seven and four nods, respectively.
Among the standout moments of the evening was The Color Purple’s historic feat, amassing a staggering 13 nominations and clinching 11 wins—a remarkable achievement that surpassed the previous record held by The Best Man (1999), Black Panther (2018), and Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey (2020), all tied with 10 nominations each.
