Wizkid has been named African Artist of the Year by Apple Music. From sold-out shows to celebs across the world dancing to his songs, attending his concerts and so much more, you’ll agree that it’s Wizkid’s world, and we are all just living in it. The Afrobeat icon has had a great run since the release of his fourth studio album “Made In Lagos” in October 2020.
The album which is unarguably his most commercially successful work so far, debuted in the UK top 15 and 80 on the Billboard 200. With his hit single Essence featuring Tems peaking at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This is a huge feat for not just the Nigerian superstar but the entire continent, as it is the first African song to do so.
Wizkid, Blazing the Global Trail
This past year, Wizkid has been the most streamed African artist on Apple Music with Essence alone gaining 125 million plays on the streaming app. It comes as no surprise therefore that he’s been named the first recipient of the newly introduced award category “Regional Artist of The Year” at the 3rd Annual Apple Music Awards.
The regional artist of the year category recognized artists from five countries and regions namely: Africa, France, Germany, Japan, and Russia with Wizkid taking home the Artist of The Year Award for Africa.
“Thank you to Apple Music for this award,” Wizkid said. “It’s a blessing to get to do what I do, and I’m proud to be representing Africa,” the singer further added.
