Today is World Tuberculosis Day, which is observed on 24 March every year. Wikipedia defines the marked event as one that was designed to build public awareness about the global epidemic of tuberculosis (TB) and efforts to eliminate the disease. The theme of World Tuberculosis Day 2021 is ‘The Clock is Ticking’. This theme has been chosen as it “conveys the sense that the world is running out of time to act on the commitments to end TB made by global leaders
It would be well to note that Tuberculosis is the leading cause of death from an infectious disease stand point and we would like to educate you with the following five facts about Tuberculosis ;
- Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by a bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB)
- It has a high fatality rate when left untreated
- It has no special symptoms apart from unexplained weight loss
- It is an airborne communicable disease. Which is why As of 2018 one quarter of the world’s population is thought to have latent infection with TB. In Nigeria studies believe that about 4% of the population is actively infected.
- The disease causing pathogen was discovered by the well renowned scientist- Robert Koch.
