Cinnamon is a spice that comes from the branches of trees of the Cinnamomum family. It’s natural habitat is the Caribbean, South America, and Southeast Asia.Research has found that cinnamon has been in use since 2000 BC in Ancient Egypt, where they regarded it highly. Cinnamon was used in medieval era by doctors to treat conditions such as coughing, arthritis, and sore throats. But apparently, this spice is still highly reverred as it is now the second most popular spice, after black pepper, in the United States and Europe. 

There are largely two types of cinnamon. Ceylon cinnamon is found majorly in Sri Lanka. Some people call it “true cinnamon.” Cassia cinnamon, on the other hand, originates from southern China. Cassia is cheaper than Ceylon cinnamon.

Cinnamon is also important for the skin because it acts as a natural exfoliator for skin and is fit to be used on all skin types. This article will look at the benefits of cinnamon to the skin.  

1. Skin Lightning

Cinnamon has skin lightening properties. It works towards fading away acne scars, blemishes, marks and dark spots. The antifungal and antibacterial properties, cinnamon helps in enhancing skin complexion.

Cinnamon is also helpful in removing acne by drying out the skin and by supporting blood flow to the skin. This is because anti-fungal, antioxidant and antibacterial properties of cinnamon makes it useful against acne. Cinnamon heals the skin and helps to clear away scar marks and spots from the skin. 

3. Heals Wounds and Cuts

Cinnamon has antiseptic Properties that can heal open cut or wounds. This can work by just dusting a pinch of cinnamon over it. The bacteria will be killed and the wound heals faster. A large number of studies some as far back as 1978 have determined the anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties of cinnamon

4. Dry and Rough Skin

The anti-oxidant properties of cinnamon can be used to soften rough skin. Cinnamon is a very good exfoliant that can be used to remove dead skin cells. It will help restore the shine and suppleness of the skin. In a study carried out in 1998, the anti-oxidant properties of Cinnamon extracts were evaluated.

How To Include Cinnamon in your diet

– Sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon over oatmeal to replace sugar.

– Add cinnamon to cakes, cookies, breads, and applesauce.

– Top a waffle with cinnamon and apple for a low sugar treat. 

– Cinnamon can be used in combination with sea salt, almond oil, honey, and olive oil.
