Kano, Nigeria — 14th September 2023. Safety for Every Girl continued their war against period poverty by hosting their first ever Back-To-School campaign in Northern Nigeria, partnering with Shatu Garko, the 44th Miss Nigeria and Nuban Beauty, one of Nigeria’s biggest indigenous make-up brands! Over 500 schoolgirls in Kano State received Period kits containing 3 day-time reusable pads, 2 night-time reusable pads, 1 storage bag, Cotton panties, Laundry soap and an educational pamphlet.
Safety for Every Girl
Speaking at the event, the founder Miss Chioma Nwigwe affirmed that-
“…no girl should experience the indignity that comes from period poverty or miss out on an education because she cannot afford the resources required to safely manage her periods. Of the 18.5 million out-of-school kids in Nigeria, 60% are girls and there is anecdotal evidence showing a correlation between these numbers and the incidence of period poverty.”
Furthermore, according to Shatu Garko, “in Nigeria today, over 37 million girls struggle with the inability to access hygienic menstrual products, education, waste management facilities or a combination of these. These are necessities, not luxury items and I am committed to consistently using my platform to create awareness about these issues starting from my hometown – Garko LGA.”
Speaking on the partnership, Stella Ndekile the founder of Nuban Beauty maintained that…
“We cannot truly speak about empowerment when millions of girls are exposed to the indignity of period poverty. The #Nubanbeautypadsagirl initiative was established in direct response to this, ensuring that no girl is left behind.”
A non-profit organization, registered in Nigeria since May 2022, Safety for Every Girl is thankful for the generosity of their donors and corporate sponsors such as Nuban Beauty.
