Food facts do not exactly come to mind when we are eating our favourite foods or any food at all. There are many number of reasons why we eat food, whether for nutritional purposes, or just for guilty pleasures, it is always good to know some facts about the foods we’re eating.
The list of our food facts includes the following;
Fruits
It might interest you to know that many of the edible fruits we consume belong to the rose family, officially known as the Rosaceae group. Apples, pears, cherries, plums, apricots, raspberries, strawberries and peaches are all members of the flowering plant group.
Coffee
Usually coffee gets a lot of flak. It can dehydrate you, it can encourage you to drink more alcohol and it can potentially lead you to consume more cigarettes but it also happens to be the biggest source of antioxidants in an average Western diet. This means that early morning cup of coffee, might in fact be helping you to fight free radicals.
Almonds
Almonds are actually a seed not a nut as we know it. They’re the seeds of a flower and they’re directly related to the botanical families of orchids and roses.
Peanuts
You may be a little shocked to find out peanuts are an ingredient in dynamite. We were too. This is what makes it possible; peanuts contain oil that is used in the process of making glycerol. Glycerol is one of the main ingredients in nitroglycerin and nitroglycerin is the main part of dynamite. Boom!!!
Onion Tears
It is alleged that if you run a hot tap whilst cutting an onion, it’ll prevent you from crying. The theory behind it is that steam from a hot tap will dissipate the vapors. I think you should try this soonest. It’ll help with the weeping while cooking.
Apples
Research has told us that there are over 7,500 varieties of apples grown in the world. Each can vary wildly in size – from a small cherry to the size of a large grapefruit. The Guinness Book of Records states that the heaviest apple weighed 1.849 kg (4 lb 1 oz) and was grown and picked by Chisato Iwasaki at his apple farm in Japan in 2005.
Greek Yoghurt
Greek yoghurt contains up to double the amount of protein present in other types of yoghurts.
Tonic Water
It is said that if you put tonic under black light, it’ll shine bright blue. It’s not magic though, just science, and this is because tonic contains quinine, which reacts with the light.
Chicken
Chicken contains 266% more fat now than it did 40 years ago. That’s 33% less protein and what is responsible for that is our modern day farming methods. This is sad news, because we know you love chicken, who doesn’t? As a result, it is advisable to opt for free-range or organic meat. We have to eat healthy.
Peaches
If we do not destroy what is left of our planet, over 99 percent of the world population will never visit the moon, however a canned peach already beat us to it, as it was the first ever fruit to be eaten on the moon.
