From her early days as a contestant in the Miss Nigeria pageant to being crowned Miss Global Nigeria 2025, Aisha’s journey has been marked by bold choices. One of them is her decision to step away from the hijab, a move that drew both curiosity and criticism. Yet through it all, she has remained grounded, finding strength in her authenticity and using her platform to spark conversations that go beyond beauty.

Aisha Abubakar on Courage, Crown & Community

Glazia: Your journey to becoming Miss Global Nigeria 2025 is inspiring. Looking back, what has been the most defining moment in your pageant journey so far?

Aisha Abubakar: The most defining moment in my pageant journey so far was stepping into the role and truly embracing the responsibility that comes with it. It wasn’t just about wearing a crown, but about realizing that I now have a platform to influence, inspire, and impact lives in a meaningful way. That realization reshaped how I saw myself and what I could achieve -not just for me, but for others who see themselves reflected in my story.

G: You were once known publicly as a hijabi. Could you share with us why you decided to stop wearing the hijab? Do you think that decision had any impact on your experience competing in pageants like Miss Nigeria, and how did you personally handle the conversations and backlash that followed?

A.A: My style has always reflected where I am in life, and evolving was about stepping into a version of myself that feels authentic and confident. That choice is also part of my personal relationship with God, and I believe it deserves respect. In pageantry, authenticity is my strength, and staying true to myself has only deepened my presence and connection with people.

G: Pageantry is often about more than the crown; it’s about the causes you stand for. What advocacy route are you choosing as Miss Global Nigeria, and why is this particular cause so important to you?

A.A: I’m championing Good Health and Well-being because I’ve seen how fragile life can be without it. For me, health is deeply personal. I’ve watched people close to me struggle in silence with issues that could have been managed or prevented with awareness and access. That left a mark on me. I believe health is the true wealth of any community; without it, dreams are cut short. As Miss Global Nigeria, I’m not just carrying a sash; I’m carrying a mission to promote conversations about preventive healthcare, mental health, and youth wellness. Because when we take care of our health, we unlock potential.

G: What advice would you give to young women struggling with staying true to themselves while also dealing with societal expectations?

A.A: My advice is this: don’t let society bully you out of your own story. I know what it feels like to be judged for your choices, but I also know the freedom that comes when you stop performing for approval. Staying true to yourself doesn’t mean you won’t face resistance; it means you’ve chosen courage over conformity. And courage is what inspires people. The world doesn’t need another copy; it needs you, your truth, your voice, your journey. That’s the legacy worth building.

On Her Legacy and Uniqueness

G: Nigeria has produced strong representatives on international stages. What unique qualities do you believe you’re bringing to the Miss Global International competition?

A.A: I believe my uniqueness lies in how I merge resilience with relatability. Nigeria has given the world queens who are bold and unshakable, and I proudly embody that. But I also bring softness, openness, and the ability to connect with people on a very human level. I don’t just want to be admired on stage, I want to be understood, to make people feel seen. That duality – strength with heart, ambition with authenticity- is what I’m bringing to the Miss Global stage.

G: Looking ahead, what do you hope your reign as Miss Global Nigeria 2025 will be remembered for?

A.A: Looking ahead, I want my reign as Miss Global Nigeria 2025 to be remembered for courage and authenticity. My journey hasn’t been the most traditional, but that’s what makes it all the more meaningful. Every choice I’ve made reflects growth and the willingness to step into my truest self. I hope people see my reign not as a break from the past, but as a celebration of evolution, the kind that sparks conversations about identity, confidence, and the freedom to embrace every season of who we are. If my story encourages even one person to embrace their truth with confidence and without fear of judgment, then I know my reign has made a difference.
