The Glazia Exclusive: Getting Candid with Andrew Yaw Bunting
Glazia: As a Ghanaian actor stepping into a Nigerian production, what was the experience of navigating a different film culture like, and how was it to reunite with and work with Uzoamaka Power again on this project?
Andrew Yaw Bunting: I’ve been blessed to have worked with a lot of good people and talented people. One of whom, of course, is Uzoamaka. It’s always easy working with her. She strives for excellence, and it pushes me to do my best. She’s a star.
G: Every actor reaches a point where self-doubt gives way to confidence. Can you remember the moment you stopped chasing validation and truly felt you belonged in the industry?
AYB: Self-doubt never really leaves, we just manage it. That being said, I’ve never chased validation. This thing that we do, the art we create, it has always been subjective; people either love it or hate it. I’m grateful for the opportunities to grow in this industry.
G: When you reflect on your career journey so far, what’s one bold decision or risk that completely shifted things for you?
AYB: The decision to come and work in Nollywood. A lot of concerned voices had reservations about Nigeria and the industry in general. I’m glad I took that risk, though; Nigeria has shown me a lot of love, and I’m grateful.
G: If the people closest to you were asked to describe Andrew Yaw Bunting in one defining trait, what do you think they would say?
AYB: I’d like to think they’d say that I’m the best thing since Banana Bread.
G: When you picture your life and career five years from now, what kind of success matters most to you outside of fame and accolades?
AYB I’d like to have worked or be working with actors, writers, and directors that I have admired for a long time.
